Course Information
Overview
P400 BOHS Asbestos Surveying and Analysis is a foundation level course, designed as a progression route to the asbestos level 4 proficiency qualification for surveyors and analysts. It gives candidates an introductory level of knowledge on the health risks of asbestos fibres, and how to manage asbestos-containing materials in their work.
Who should attend
It is suitable for those who are training to, or would like to become, an asbestos analyst and/or asbestos surveyor.
The P400 course will provide you with a basic understanding of health risks associated with exposure to asbestos fibres, and to provide an introduction to the relevant legislation and safety procedures for managing asbestos-containing materials.
Entry Requirements
There are no pre-requisites for this course. However, knowledge of HSG264 ‘Asbestos: the survey guide’ and HSG248 ‘Asbestos: The analysts guide for sampling, analysis and clearance procedures’ would be a huge advantage.
The above documents can be downloaded as pdf’s, free of charge, from the HSE website. We strongly recommend you grab a copy and read both documents.
There is a lot of information contained in the documents, much of it you will not need on this course but nevertheless useful for your future role within the asbestos industry, so we suggest dividing your reading into the topics covered by the syllabus.
Candidates also need basic literacy and numeracy skills.
Teaching Learning Time
The P400 course runs over one day and includes at least five hours of teaching.
The course can be delivered more flexibly, such as an evening or part-day course, but should still include five hours of education.

Recommended Core Competencies
Assessment and Examination
Candidates are required to pass one multiple-choice examination to complete the course.
The examination is comprised of 20 multiple-choice questions, to be answered in 30 minutes. This is a closed-book exam, students are not permitted to have access to any materials.
For each question, students will choose one of four possible answers. The questions are a mix of text and diagram-based questions.
To gain the P400 qualification, the examination must be passed within 12 months of the course date.
Resits are permitted.
