P405 BOHS Management of Asbestos in Buildings including Asbestos Removal

Important information for students training at one of our venues and undertaking the BOHS examination.
The training days will be conducted at the venue, that is days 1 to 4. Since the BOHS exams are now online, candidates have the flexibility to take them in any location with a stable internet connection and minimal noise, such as at home or in the office. The training room will not be available for the examination. Candidates are kindly requested to arrange their own preferred location for undertaking the online exams.

Overview
P405 – Management of Asbestos in Buildings is the industry-standard qualification for those whose work involves asbestos management, such as duty holders, building managers, responsible persons, and those who look after asbestos management data.
Who should attend
This qualification is suitable for duty holders and anyone who:
- manages asbestos in buildings.
- procures asbestos-related services.
- provides assistance to duty holders in a supporting role.
- has a surveying, assessment or analytical background and is looking to progress into asbestos management.
- manages or oversees asbestos removal on site (e.g. an analyst or building owner).
- has the day-to-day responsibility to manage the asbestos register, asbestos data information and asbestos management action plan.
Entry Requirements
Candidates should have an awareness of the contents of the following:
- Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
- HSE L143 Managing and working with asbestos, ACoP and guidance (2012)
- HSE HSG248 Asbestos: The analysts guide (2021 2nd edition)
- HSE HSG264 Asbestos: the survey guide (2012)
These documents will be provided to candidates who book the course with us, however, they are available individually as free pdf downloads from the ‘resources’ section of the HSE website https://www.hse.gov.uk/asbestos/.
Candidates also need basic literacy and numeracy skills. Some candidates may require a calculator for part of the course.

Assessment and Examination
Please be aware that ALL examinations are conducted online through Microsoft Teams and BOHS exam portal.
Candidates are required to pass two mandatory components in order to be awarded the BOHS P405 qualification:

- Practical assessment (open-book)
- Written Examination 1 (open book)
- Written Examination 2 (open book)
Practical Assessment
The practical assessment will be carried out by the tutor during the relevant part of the course for all candidates. This is to ensure that every candidate can demonstrate their individual understanding and correct method for:
• The conversion of survey data into a building management action plan
• The thorough appraisal of contractor documentation and methods
• How to carry out inspections of an enclosure and hygiene unit both prior to works and post remediation
• An understanding of the roles played by the various parties including the client, contractor’s contract manager and supervisor, HSE Inspector/EHO, analyst and TU representative, etc and appreciate the pressures and demands on various parties during an asbestos removal project
Written Examination 1
This is an open-book examination comprising of approximately 35 (140 marks) short-answer questions illustrated by photographs and diagrams as appropriate to be answered in 120 minutes.
The examination covers sections 1 and 2 of the syllabus with achievable marks in proportion to the time allocation given on the front page of the syllabus and is overseen by a BOHS invigilator.
The overall pass mark is 55% with a requirement to reach at least 45% of the available marks in each section of the syllabus.
Written Examination 2
This is an open-book examination comprising of approximately 35 (140 marks) short-answer questions illustrated by photographs and diagrams as appropriate to be answered in 120 minutes.
The examination covers sections 3 and 4 of the syllabus with achievable marks in proportion to the time allocation given on the front page of the syllabus and is overseen by a BOHS invigilator.
The overall pass mark is 55% with a requirement to reach at least 45% of the available marks in each section of the syllabus.
Candidates who pass all the parts detailed above within 12 months will be awarded a:
• (P405) Proficiency Certificate in Management of Asbestos in Buildings (including asbestos removal)
Resits of any part are permitted.
