Course Information
Overview
Asbestos surveyors play an important role in ensuring that building premises are safe for normal occupational use. They also play a crucial role during refurbishment and demolition works to identify the asbestos within the scope of the proposed works, for it to be removed safely. The P402 – Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings qualification give surveyors the necessary knowledge and skills to identify and safely survey buildings for asbestos.
Who should attend
This qualification is suitable for:
- Asbestos surveyors, or managers of surveyors and surveying teams.
- Asbestos re-inspectors, or anyone that undertakes asbestos re-inspections.
- Those who require a detailed understanding of asbestos surveying principles (e.g. asbestos report writers, architects, building surveyors etc.)
Entry Requirements
A minimum of six months experience of asbestos surveying under the supervision of a competent surveyor carrying out identification, sampling, and assessment of asbestos-containing materials is also recommended, to help the candidate to understand the different types of building constructions and uses of building materials.
Candidates who don’t possess practical field work experience are more than welcome to join the course. In these circumstances, we strongly suggest reading
Candidates also need basic literacy and numeracy skills. Calculators will be necessary for part of the course.
Teaching Learning Time
The course can be delivered more flexibly, such as on one day per week for three weeks, but should still include 12 hours of teaching.

- Be aware of the main requirements of UKAS’s RG8 publication.
- Understand the importation and range of uses of asbestos in past plant, equipment, building and engineering construction practices to a degree that enables them to make accurate judgements about how to best plan and conduct a survey and to then offer the client a suggested structure for drawing up a risk-based management plan and a management system for avoiding inadvertent disturbance of ACMs.
The above will include knowledge of building services and plant and equipment for commercial and domestic fire protection, compartmentation, and insulation, braking and process containment. In buildings this should include common airflow patterns and fibre spread etc.Be able to devise suitable proportionate bulk sampling strategies for a variety of situations and ACMs.
- Be able to apply the guidance in HSG264 and other relevant HSE online or printed guidance on surveys.
- Be able to decide when enclosures and DCUs might be needed in respect of survey work.

- Be familiar with a range of risk assessment and commonly used decision processes and electronic and hard copy formats.
- Understand the full range of solutions for minimising asbestos fibre release from in situ ACM and be able to estimate likely fibre release from remedial work.
- Be able to assess the level of understanding of the individual client and respond accordingly.
- Be able to make written recommendations for risk-based future actions in a format agreed with the client which is suitable for the client’s level of understanding.

Assessment and Examination
Please be aware that ALL examinations are conducted online through Microsoft Teams and BOHS exam portal.
Candidates are required to pass three mandatory components in order to be awarded the BOHS P402 qualification:
- Formative practical assessment (open-book)
- Written Examination 1 (open book)
- Written Examination 2 (open book)
Formative practical assessmentTaking bulk samples of asbestos-containing materials in a safe manner is an essential part of carrying out an asbestos building survey. The formative practical assessment is designed to enable candidates to demonstrate that they have attained the relevant knowledge and skills in the following areas:
- Knowledge of health and safety issues involved in surveying and bulk sampling of asbestos-containing materials.
- Skills in taking samples of different types of asbestos-containing materials commonly used in buildings.
The formative practical assessment requires candidates to complete a number of practical tasks in line with BOHS guidelines. All candidates must undertake the tasks at an appropriate time during the course under the supervision of the course tutor. The tutor may be assisted by other appropriately qualified and experienced people if necessary.
The assessment is open-book and candidates are permitted to access written reference materials and written procedures during the tasks but not electronic databases.
The course tutor is permitted to support candidates who are experiencing difficulties in carrying out one or more of the tasks, for example by providing verbal feedback or by demonstrating correct techniques. However, to complete the assessment, candidates must demonstrate a satisfactory level of proficiency in all tasks independently and without support.
